STORY
The Octomaya project started in 2023, when Valerie (a french canadian traveler) decided to move to the small fisherman village she had fallen for ten years prior: Sisal. Because of it’s slow pace, the people, the simplicity, the history and the incredible natural beauty. But also because of the way the locals fight to keep their culture and nature. Because of conservation projects. The way locals got in action to organize a structure for the local fisherman to thrive in the developing tourism sector.
A university (marine masters and doctorates) in the village allowed Valerie to study and understand the local dynamics. Friendships with locals allowed to dream of ways to help in their fight to protect the community from am invasion of blinded investors. She wanted to be part of that mission to keep the essence of the culture that made her fall for the village, while developing opportunities for the people. Can bringing foreigners interested in their ways help them gain strength? Can she bring tourists to realize the local impacts of fast travel and apply more sustainable ways of traveling? The challenge started.
Why stay with us
Octomaya has comfortable private rooms with bathroom, A/C, hammock, hot water, wifi. Guests have access to a large shared dining room / relaxation room, a kitchen, the porch and the rooftop. We offer good coffee in the mornings. Your experience includes an introductory walk in the village, and the travel agency’s support to plan your excursions, movements and needs. The beach is a two minutes walk from the house and the center of the village is a ten minute walk. You can use our paddle board, kayak, bicycle and other beach items!

What to do in the village?
Sisal is nested between a long white beach on the Gulf of Mexico and protected lagoons with mangroves. One can easily enjoy a full week of Sisal’s wonders without needing transportation. Or one can move around the province to discover the area’s rich cultural and natural treasures. At Octomaya we will help you find the best option for you.
